๐ŸŒฟ Eco-Score

What is the Eco-Score methodology?

The Eco-Score is based on the calculation of the life cycle analysis produced by ADEME (the ecological transition agency) and INRAE (the national institute for agronomic research). About fifteen components are calculated and linked to create the PEF score.

To this PEF score are added bonuses and maluses (mode of production, origin of

ingredients, endangered species, packaging) in order to calculate the Eco-Score.

For more information, see the summary pageย https://world.openfoodfacts.org/eco-score-the-environmental-impact-of-food-productsย on Open Food Facts as well as on the Eco-Score consortium website. (Eco-Score presentation https://docs.score-environnemental.com/)

๐ŸŒฟ Eco-Score

What type of information must be given for the Eco-Score to be calculated as accurately as possible?

For the Eco-Score to be calculated exactly, the percentage of each ingredient and its origin must be specified.

If this information is not already specified in the list of ingredients, you can add a column to mention it, with the following format:

Wheat flour 16% (France)

Chocolate 8% (Ivory Coast, Ecuador)

We need also the components of the packaging in the form of: 1 plastic film to throw away, 1 FSC cardboard box to recycle, 6 PET transparent plastic bottles of 1.5 L to recycle, 6 opaque colored plastic caps, 12 plastic cans 33 cl aluminum.

๐ŸŒฟ Eco-Score

How are the values โ€‹โ€‹of the 15 indicators combined?

To better understand the PEF system, you can read: explanation of the PEF score on the Eco-Score methodological site

๐ŸŒฟ Eco-Score

Does the local aspect concern the place of manufacture or the place of origin of the raw materials?

The local aspect concerns the origin of the raw materials. This is why it is important to enter their percentages as well as their origins in the list of product ingredients or in the field dedicated to the origins of ingredients.

๐ŸŒฟ Eco-Score

How to enter the origins of ingredients for the eco-score?

If you wish to share the information on the origin of the raw materials on your sheets, we invite you to include them in the list of ingredients.

๐Ÿ“ฅ Data download

Where to get the data for a specific country?

Currently, there are no exports dedicated to specific countries.

There are many ways to use our different exports combined with different tools to select the data related to a specific country.

You can have a look at some of this techniques on our wiki.

๐Ÿฅ— Nutri-Score

What should I do if the Nutri-Score of my products is not correct?

In the event of a problem with your Nutri-Score, check that your information is correct on the โ€œmodifyโ€ tab of your product sheet. If any information is missing or incorrect, do not hesitate to contact us atย producers@openfoodfacts.org

๐Ÿฅ— Nutri-Score

What type of information should I provide so that the Nutri-Score is calculated as accurately as possible?

The calculation of the Nutri-Score will be done with the nutritional table of your product.

Don't forget to include the percentage of fruits, vegetables and nuts in your table, so that the calculated Nutri-Score is not incorrect.

๐Ÿฅ— Nutri-Score

Where does the Nutri-Score come from ?

The Nutri-Score is managed by Santรฉ Publique France. It summarizes the table of nutritional values โ€‹โ€‹so that everyone can understand it. The goal is to provide access to clear and understandable nutritional information for everyone.

โ“ Open Food Facts

What is the difference with other web sites, services and mobile applications that already allow to view food products information?

The main difference is for us a critical one: our data is freely available to all and for all uses. It's what is called open data.

Almost all other sites, services and applications forbid others from reproducting and reusing their data. Quite to the contrary, they jealously keep it for themselves. In almost all cases, their terms of service explicitly forbid any non-personal use and any extraction of all the data or parts of the data.

We consider that food products information is too important and useful to keep it locked in a safe. So when we started the Open Food Facts project and mobile app, back in 2012, we decided to do exactly the opposite: not only we allow use and reuse of our database, freely and without fee, to everyone and for all uses (including commercial), but we also encourage it!

Making the data publicly available (what is known asย open data) allows individuals, associations, companies, researchers etc. from all around the world to think up and develop applications for the data that we certainly would never have thought about.

โ“ Open Food Facts

What is Open Food Facts' economic model

Contributors are volunteers. Their contributions are gathered in an open database that can be used by everyone and for all uses. (see theย Terms of reuse)

Everyone (including but not limited to Open Food Facts contributors and creators) can thus redistribute and/or reuse the data to build web sites, services, software, mobile applications, or to write articles and studies. They are free to make the resulting work freely available, or to sell or monetize it (e.g. with ads), as long as they respect the terms of reuse.

We are also strictly independent from the food industry, and all the services and software we build are free. For example, our Platform for Producers is totally free, and we are all the more pleased with that because we think it might help them improve their products.

โ“ Open Food Facts

Can I add product pictures or data from the manufacturer's site, shopping sites or other sites?

Probably not. Almost all other sites forbid reproduction and reuse of their data and images, and that is actually the reason why we have created Open Food Facts: to make all this data available to all and for all uses.

To avoid any legal problem, we therefore ask contributors to only add pictures that they took themselves, and only data that is coming from the product packaging and label.

โ“ Open Food Facts

How can I contact the Open Food Facts team, ask questions or make suggestions?

You can ask questions or make suggestions on theforumor contact us by e-mail:contact@openfoodfacts.org

If you are a producer, please email us atย producers@openfoodfacts.org.

If you are a journalist, please email us atย presse@openfoodfacts.org.

Please note:ย Open Food Facts is a collaborative database of food products, we do not sell any product and we do not have links to their producers. For a question or complain about a product, you need to write directly to the producer (address on the product label).

โ“ Open Food Facts

Is the information and data on products verified?

The information and data is submited by the Open Food Facts contributors. The contributors also send pictures of the product, its labels, ingredients lists and nutrition facts table. When in doubt, visitors can thus check the accuracy by themselves, and if there is an error, they can correct it on the spot.

To detect potential errors more easily, we will progressively add automated checks. e.g. if the nutrition facts of a product are very different from products of the same category, it may be an error. If the nutriments add up to more than 100%, it's definitely an error.

Finally, many producers send us photos and data about their products using our Platform for Producers. If you are a producer, pleaseย contact us

โ“ Open Food Facts

I am a food product manufacturer, can I add my own products?

Yes! The only condition is to accept that the data and the pictures be made available under an open licence. (see theย Terms of contribution)

We have developped a free platform to let you easily import photos and data about your products, regardless of your size. It will let you import complete and up-to-date data and visuals into Open Food Facts that will be visible in more than 100 other nutritional apps. Additionaly, the platform provides suggestions to improve the Nutri-Score of your products. Contact-us to discuss how we could proceed:ย producers@openfoodfacts.org

๐Ÿพ Open Pet Food Facts

Why is there no Nutri-Score for animals?

Each animal is different (a snake does not have the same nutritional needs as a cat or a dog)

Even within the same type of animal such as dogs, the nutritional needs vary according to the life of the sedentary lifestyle, a possible castration or diseases.

It is therefore complicated to calculate a score for animal feed without involving dozens of researchers and creating dozens of different algorithms, which has not been done to date.

๐Ÿพ Open Pet Food Facts

Where can I find the Open Pet Food Facts API ?

Open Pet Food Facts API is 98% the same as Open Food Facts API so if you use Open Food Facts API documentation you should have a pretty clear view of the Open Pet Food Facts API.

Note that features like the Knowledge Panels, Eco-Score, Nutri-Score are not supported (either due to the topic, or to the old codebase).

๐Ÿ’ป API & data reuse

Are there recommendations anywhere in the documentation on what would be a good size for uploaded photos?

That may depend on countries, if network is slow or expensive. anything above 5000 pixels in weight or height is probably not very useful. and if you can somehow detect that network is slow, then even a 2000 pixels image would be great (certainly better than not having an image!)

๐Ÿ’ป API & data reuse

What about food without barcodes ?

Open Food Facts contains only information about packaged food. For average values of produce (for example, tomatoes or bananas) and other food products, you can use one of the official national nutrition databases instead.

๐Ÿ’ป API & data reuse

Can I search a precise product name with the API?

Unfortunately it's not yet possible to easily search on product name only and precisely through the API.

Using a filter on category might help you make your search more precise though.

๐Ÿ’ป API & data reuse

How can I access/collect data for my projects?

On Open Food Factsโ€™ main page, at the top left corner of the screen, thereโ€™s a scrolling menu. At the bottom of it, youโ€™ll find the โ€œadvanced searchโ€ option, on which you can click. It is then up to you to determine which criteria are the most relevant to your project(s). Once chosen, youโ€™ll be able to download the obtained results by scrolling down at the bottom of the page and clicking on โ€œDownload resultsโ€.

You can also consult:

๐Ÿ’ป API & data reuse

Are there conditions to use the API?

All the documentation about API usage can be found on the API documentation page, but here is a quick summary:

  • The Open Food Facts database is available as open data under the Open Database License (ODbL), see https://world.openfoodfacts.org/terms-of-use for the legal details. The two conditions are attribution and share-alike. If you combine data from Open Food Facts with other databases, then the ODbL requires that the resulting database must be released as open data as well. It also means that you can combine the data only with sources that would allow such redistribution.
  • You must always use a custom User-Agent when performing API calls to identify your app.
  • Rate-limits are enforced for each API endpoint.
๐Ÿ’ป API & data reuse

How can I access historical data?

Currently, we don't offer historical data dump (JSONL, MongoDB, CSV).

However, for individual products, it's possible to access previous versions of the product data using the API or on the product page using revisions.

Every time a product is updated, a new revision (increasing digit starting from 1) is created.

For example, to get the first revision (=first product version) of this product, use

https://world.openfoodfacts.org/product/7623186089763/joghurt-baumnuss-migros?rev=1.

Similarly, the rev parameter can be used with the API:

https://world.openfoodfacts.org/api/v2/product/7623186089763?rev=1

๐Ÿค Volunteering / Contribution

Is there a way to remove uploaded images for products?

Only moderators can remove photos, to avoid potential vandalism.

Just ask on Slack or at contact@openfoodfacts.org to remove your duplicates or any inappropriate photos (you should try to provide the barcode number or URL to so).

We also have a new image report API if you're a programmer.

๐Ÿค Volunteering / Contribution

I'm a designer. How can I help ?

We coordinate all design related activities onย https://github.com/openfoodfacts/openfoodfacts-designย and on a dedicated chat channel. We regularly do team meetings and brainjams on specific challenges.

๐Ÿค Volunteering / Contribution

In some cases the same product can have different nutritional values for each country, how is this handled in Open Food Facts ?

99% of the time, producers will create different barcodes for different versions of their products. A famous example is the difference between French and German Nutella in terms of thickness, due to difference in bread across countries. 2 different formulas, 2 different barcodes.

Barcode clash can however happen on shorter codes (EAN-8) that are typically reused by some stores across Europe and the US. We don't currently handle those barcode clashes, but it should be doable to do so by getting the user's general location (it's even more rare to have barcode clashes within a country).

In the long term, we encourage producers to move to EAN-13 to avoid those barcode clashes.

๐ŸŒ Improving Open Food Facts in my language/country

I would like to add a new logo for labels

Here is the process:

  • find the canonical name of the label in the labels' taxonomy (it's the first item in the list of the labels' synonyms, eg. en:100% vegetable)

- get the logo in a good quality: avoid using the contributor's photo which are not suited for this case; most labels have official websistes high quality logos, sometimes in vector format (even better for us); as long as we use a logo to objectively inform about the presence of a label on the packaging of a product, there is no need to ask permission. - name the file like this: ย  name-of-the-label.[width]x90.png ย where width is the width for the logo when it is 90 pixels high. The filenames need to be unaccented, in lowercase and using "-" instead of spaces.

๐ŸŒ Improving Open Food Facts in my language/country

How do I translate this FAQ to my language ?

Please ask contact@openfoodfacts.org for edit access to the knowledge base.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Technical FAQ

Should I update all language files when I change a source string?

No you don't. You just need to update the English one

  • Create your PR

Once it's merged, we willย rebase crowdin-trigger manuallyย and the Crowdin translation system triggerd by GitHub Actions will do the rest for other languages.

GitHub bot then creates a new PR automatically that we then review.

โ„น๏ธ About Open Food Facts

What type of information should be shared?

Any information you have is welcome, from nutritional information to packaging information.

This makes it possible to establish a complete file, to calculate all the scores with precision and more generally a transparency appreciated by consumers.

However we do recommend you prioritize the following fields:

  • Nutritional information
  • Product category (e.g. drinks, cheese, yogurt, etc.)
  • Name of the product
  • Allergens
  • and the ingredients, this field is not mandatory but recommended for an optimal usage and determination of the scores

โ†’ย For more details, we invite you toย download our user guideย and/or consult our video tutorialsย :-)

โ„น๏ธ About Open Food Facts

๐Ÿ“ˆ About the scores

Who is responsible for calculating the footprint and/or score?

The Nutri-Score, NOVA group and Eco-Score are calculated based onย the data present in Open Food Facts. Ourย algorithms strictly follow the official methodologies of these scores.

๐Ÿ“ˆ About the scores

What is the difference between the Eco-Score, the Nutri-Score and the NOVA group?

The purpose of these indicators is to provide easy-to-understand information for the consumer.

Theย NOVA groupย deals with the transformation of the product, theEco-Scoreย with its environmental impact and theย Nutri-Scoreย with the nutritional elements, knowing that the more a product has scores close to A, the more qualitative it is.

The 3 scores do not deal with the same elements. It is therefore not possible to compare them with each other.

๐Ÿ“ˆ About the scores

Is it possible to simulate the Eco-Score or Nutri-Score of my products?

By registering on the producers' platform and upload your products' data, you can compute the Nutri-Score and Eco-Score associated with your products.

However, you must delete it once the simulation has been carried out so that it is not exported to the public platform with the products already marketed in your range.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Manage my products

What guarantees the quality of the data in Open Food Facts?

To continuously improve the quality of the data we rely on 4 pillars:

  1. The community is constantly adding data and photos and is a veritable patrol of reviewers.
  1. We have set logic rules to identify errors on the product sheets.ย For example: if the sum of the weight of the ingredients is greater than the total weight of the product, there is an anomaly. We have around 50 others quality checks.
  1. Thanks to Machine Learning, we limit the risk of input errors. Our technology allows us to extract textual data from photos taken by contributors
  1. Thanks to the support of Santรฉ Publique France, we developed a portal allowing producers to upload their mass-produced data and thus correct/complete the community's contributions.
๐Ÿ“ฆ Manage my products

How to add products?

To add products to our platform, you first need to decide how you want to proceed. There are 4 options:

  • Manually: if you have a small number of products, it is still possible to create each product sheet by hand on the Pro Platform.
  • Via a spreadsheet import: you can download the spreadsheetย templateย provided by Open Food Facts, or import directly an extraction from your IT system into the Pro platform.
  • Via product catalogues' connectors. If you are client at EQUADIS, AGENA3000 or BAYARD, you can upload data in Open Food Facts in 1 click. If you are working with another PIM (Product Information Management), please contact us : producers@openfoodfacts.org
  • Via a tailored connexion between your company and Open Food Facts. If you count more than 1000 products in your portfolio, we can discuss the opportunity of build a specific connector to ease the data transfer.

For more details, we invite you toย download ourย user guideย and/or consult ourย video tutorialsย :-)

๐Ÿ“ฆ Manage my products

Is there a way to automate product updates to the public database?

Yes, if you use EQUADIS, AGENA3000 or BAYARD product catalogues, and set up the right configuration, the import can be done automatically and therefore update the product data on Open Food Facts.

โ†’ย For more details, we invite you toย download ourย user guideย and/or consult ourย video tutorialsย :-)

๐Ÿ“ฆ Manage my products

Is the number of added products limited?

There is no limit, you can upload the number of products you want on our platform.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Manage my products

Is it possible to delete products that are no longer sold?

If you want to remove a product that is no longer available on the market, you just have to check the box "this product is no longer sold" when you edit your product sheet.

If you want to remove several products, we recommend you follow the procedure mentioned in the user guide, on p. 18.

You can also contact us via producers@openfoodfacts.org if you have any questions.

When the product is archived, it will no longer appear in Open Food Facts.ย It will however remain in our databaseย so that we can keep a history of products sold over time.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Manage my products

Does company information take precedence over information already present on the platform?

When a producer places one of his products online with his producer account and a product sheet already exists, this will complete it.

The information that the producer will have posted will always have priority and he alone will be able to modify his products when the information is filled in.

If the data sent via the platform is fragmented, the information added by the community from the packaging may complete it.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Manage my products

In what format should I send my data?

A template is provided by Open Food Facts.

However, any spreadsheet format (xlsx, csv) will be importable in the platform. Our algorithm is designed to automatically match the attributes from your file, with the ones present in Open Food Facts. Beware to always double-check the matching stage as you may need to adjust manually some of them.

If your information is fragmented between several spreadsheets, you can import them consecutively - making sure to do the matching if the format changes.

You can also import an Excel file in addition to an EQUADIS or AGENA3000 import, if the data is not yet in your information system. In these cases, don't forget to request an export to the public database from the interface.

โ†’ย For more details, we invite you toย download ourย user guideย and/or consult ourย video tutorialsย :-)

๐Ÿ“ฆ Manage my products

With which product catalogs are you integrated?

Manufacturers can now send their product data and photos in real time from Equadis,ย AGENA3000 and BAYARD consulting to Open Food Facts.

You will of course also benefit from the reformulation suggestions and all the features of the platform.

Our blog post explains the steps to follow if you are an EQUADIS customer.

If you are an AGENA3000 customer (Product A3 PIM INDUSTRY), you just have to select the recipient "Open Food Facts" when sending your product sheets. More information on this blog post.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Manage my products

How to add products without barcodes via the Pro platform?

For products without a barcode, on the site or on the producer platform, there is a "Product without barcode" button in the left column which allows you to add them. An identifier is then generated automatically.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Manage my products

Can animal products, non-food products, cosmetics and other products be integrated into Open Food Facts?

We have created specific projects for cosmetics, for animal feed, as well as for other products:Open Beauty Facts,Open Pet Food FactsandOpen Products Factsrespectively. We are therefore happy to be able to import your products into the project that suits them.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Manage my products

Product data from my company is available on Open Food Facts. Is it possible to take control of the associated producer account?

Yes of course! You can take control of the associated producer account by creating an Open Food Facts account with your business address. When you register, mention the name of the organization present on the form to be able to access the corresponding producer space.

A short validation step will be necessary to ensure that you are indeed the producer.

You will be able to complete the data, add images, obtain automatic recommendations for improving the Nutri-Score, and much more. All this is of course completely free. You can also connect a third-party product data management system such as EQUADIS , AGENA3000 and Bayard consulting.

How long does it take for producer data to be updated on other app reusing Open Food Facts database?

It depends on the apps. For those that use our APIs, which is the vast majority, it is immediate. For the ones that use our daily exports, it's D+1 provided that they update it.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Manage my products

Does importing the data from a product record complete or overwrite the existing product record?

We use the barcode to identify products, if you import a record with the same barcode as an existing record, the information will be merged.

For data such as ingredient list, nutritional values (only one correct value possible), the data sent via the producer platform will overwrite the existing data.

For data such as labels/categories/brands (several correct values possible), the information is merged. If data is incorrect on the public platform, you can modify the product sheet on the public platform to remove the incorrect values.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Manage my products

Is the order of ingredients important?

The order of the ingredientsis important: it represents the order by quantity. The best way to fill the ingredients is to follow exactly what is written on the packaging. That's why it is also so important to have photos of the ingredients printed.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Manage my products

Can I send images via AGENA3000 too?

You can send images but in practice only the main image will be selected automatically, the other images will be sent, but not cropped / selected for ingredients, nutrition etc.

๐Ÿท๏ธ Labels

As a label, is it important to create an account ?

As a label, as you are not the direct producer of the products, you do not need to create a producerโ€™s account.

๐Ÿท๏ธ Labels

I am a label, how can I participate in the project?

As a label the most relevant thing to do is to contact us (producers@openfoodfacts.org) and send us the list of the products on which your label is displayed so that we can add them on the related product sheets.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Packaging

How can I add my packaging data to Open Food Facts?

As a producer, the most efficient way to add packaging data to your products is by filling in thisย excel spreadsheet the necessary information, from column "AU".

For each packaging component, you will need to enter:

  • The number of units (ex: 4 pots of yogurts)
  • The shape (ex: pot, lid, box, etc)
  • The material (ex: PET, paper, glass, etc)
  • The recycling instruction (ex: to recycle, to discard, etc)
  • The weight of one empty unit (in gr)
  • The net quantity of product contained per unit

This spreadsheet can then be imported into our platform dedicated to professionals.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Packaging

What is the Tackling Food Packaging project?

The "Tackling Food Packaging" project consists of collecting detailed information on the packaging of the most consumed products (shape, material, sorting instructions, weight, capacity).

Based on a participatory science approach, it will rely both on companies agreeing to share their packaging data and to play the game of transparency, and on citizens allowing the collection of information on products. This information will be freely reusable ("open data").

๐Ÿ’ถ Open Prices

Iโ€™m a retailer and I want to contribute prices. How can I do that?

You can contribute prices by usingย our API. If you want to contribute prices at scale, please get in touch with us atย contact@openfoodfacts.org.

๐Ÿ’ถ Open Prices

Do you consider scraping prices from retailersโ€™ websites?

For legal and technical reasons, we donโ€™t consider scraping prices from retailersโ€™ websites as a valid way to contribute to Open Prices. We want to make sure that the prices we collect are accurate and up-to-date, and receiving scraped prices from contributors doesnโ€™t allow us to do that.

Price scraping is a considered option in a future version of Open Prices, but it would be done by Open Prices itself so that we can have a proof of the price based on the HTML page.

๐Ÿ’ถ Open Prices

Why is Open Food Facts doing this (Open Prices)?

Price information is of paramount importance to understand food systems. Itโ€™s a key factor in understanding the cost of food and to promote healthier diets. Opening price data is a way to make it easier for researchers, journalists, and citizens to have a better understanding of how food prices vary geographically and in time.
